The Makings of Mobile Makerspace

 The Makings of  Mobile Makerspace

For this assignment, I chose to use the library that I work at. By doingn so, it helped me tremendously. I am always in our programming room full of supplies and am constantly thinking of ways to use our resources. Our biggest issue is that there really is no space for a dedicated Makerspace. So by using this idea of a Mobile Makerspace whether it be a cart or two, we can easily get our patrons access to more materials and ade them in learning new skills.
Now, my list and budget were pretty simple and I think that's a great thing! My goal wasn't to just start from scratch, but to use what we have and suppleemnt it with things we need. The one component I did not want to skimp on was the 3D printer. Every patron loves to watch that thing go! Most even come up and ask how to learn about it. We do not have a computer lab or carts, so having the abiablty to tecah how to use the programs our 3D print masters use for patrons to make their own designs would hit a major need and also be a major hit!
I think I went with a very simpalistic, yet realistic route. With a little bit of tweaking and some more background on how I could actuall allocte funds, I would even like to present this idea to our administration!
Let me know what you guys think!

  1. Hi Josie! I think this is a totally creative way to do a makerspace when you don't have the space for one! I also liked how you mentioned that it would actually be a positive thing to have a machine like the 3D printer out in the open, as opposed to a sequestered area, because people like to watch it work, which in turn sparks curiosity. That's just good marketing!

  2. Hi Josie! I love the idea of making a mobile makerspace. While I tried to make my project somewhat to my current library and position, I had no idea where to put the makerspace! Instead, I made a fictional room for the purpose of the assignment and have been thinking ever since. Mobile stations could make it easy for both staff and patrons in only pulling out what is needed at any given time. It could be fun to get a few carts and theme them. One with the 3D printer and applicable supplies, one for the Cricut, etc. You have certainly got me thinking about the possibilities with this post!
